To return to the play-off topic ( I didn't read the end of the play for two actors over pages 4,5 and 6 I'm afraid).



I can see that there are cons to the current format, but it does keep the season alive and certainly hasn't, as far as I can tell, dimmed anybody's enthusiasm for the regular rounds. SO, while I see the logic, it doesn't appear to have actually happened in real life. As such it seems a slight red herring to me, in using the play-off structure to explain a phenomenon that hasn't actually occurred.



I definitely don't buy the "5th is better than 4th" line. The end result is that, to get to Old Trafford, either Leeds or Hudds probably always had to beat Wire. But Huddersfield would get to do it at the second attempt, Leeds could only ever have one attempt. So that's advantage Huddersfield. There is the matter of a head-to-head meeting. Which Huddersfield get to be at home for. So the deck seems to me to be substantially better stacked for 4th place than 5th.



My only real problem with the top 8 format is that it is too likely to throw up repeat fixtures, in that both the semi finals (proper ones, I lose track of all this qualifying, elimination etc stuff - the round where there are 2 matches with the winners getting to the final seems like a semi final round to me...) are fairly likely to be re-runs of the top 4's first round fixtures.
