Doh! I do get it now. All the clubs play each other in the top 8, so better to play them at home.

I think 4th looks slightly easier than 3rd.

That probably explains why Wigan are purposely losing games so they can aim for fourth

How does the bottom four work? How do they decide who stays up and who goes down ?

Top 3 in the middle 8 go into the following year's SL automatically. 4th and 5th play off for the last SL spot in 'the million pound game'.

I think all of that is right except that they only play each other once. I think the SL clubs get the extra home fixture.

Actually, the extra home fixtures don't all go to the SL sides. The ranking goes like this:



1: SL 9th

2: SL 10th

3: CH 1st

4: CH 2nd

5: SL 11th

6: SL 12th

7: CH 3rd

8: CH 4th



Clubs ranked 1-4 get 4 home games, those ranked 5-8 only get 3.
