We'd have to sell our soul to SKY for that to happen

Taking this back to a slightly more comparable code. The average SL wage is around £65k a year and the average Aviva Premiership English RU wage is £85k. We have a cap for the top 25 players and they have a cap of £4m for every player at the club.
London are the latest club to go to the limit of the salary cap, my question is can we raise it from £1.65m to say £1.8m. A relatively minor jump, but could our clubs afford this, or will the Man City's or Saracens off this sporting world come and pick off our best players for years to come.

| The RL salary cap's 20-20 rule limited a team to name twenty players who could earn £20,000 a year or more. Dave Whelan was talking on TV recently of Premier League clubs introducing a limit of only five players able to earn £ 20,000 a week!!!
Whelan talks a lot of sense at times based on his Rugby League knowledge.

Not really. Any salary cap in football would have to be at the very very least European-wide and probably world-wide. If that rule proposed by Dave Whelan were to be introduced then all that would happen is the vast majority of current Premier League players would move to French, Spanish, Italian or German clubs that don't operate under a salary cap.
Plus when he was in charge of a rugby league club he wanted rid of the salary cap so that he could use his money to spend Wigan to victory. Since he can't come close to competing with Man Utd, Chelsea or Man City money he wants a salary cap to help out Wigan Athletic.
Football desperately does need a salary cap, but as I said it absolutely has to be world-wide and not implemented unilaterally, it would be suicide for the Premier League and English football.

20 premiership teams, say a squad of 25 so that's 500 players. Even if every player was paid the same as Tevez on 250,000 a week that would only amount to £500m.
That would pay off 0.12% of the US yearly debt interest payments.
Whilst the footballers are paid ridiculous sums of money, at least some of them have some talent rather than those overpaid arrogant t0ssers in The City, happily taking millions in bonuses while laying people off thanks to their own greed.

There aren't 25 players on £250,000 a week in the Premier League. Bar the top two or three I doubt any player is. Everton for example only recently broke their self imposed wage cap of £40,000 a week and that was for Mikel Arteta who has since been flogged.
But on football, it's not like there is that much money in the sport. The sport spends more than it earns each year. Pretty unsustainable if you ask me.

Yes that would be the yearly wage of all the players, except the poster I was responding to clearly stated only a months wages would solve the problem. Excellent reading there
Even so, if we took an entire League of Tevez-like wages for a whole year it would pay only 1.5% of the US annual debt interest payments, it's hardly solving the entire financial crisis.

The game just doesn't generate enough interest over here mate, RL will never be in a position to pay a player £200 grand a week,
Joel Tomkins reputed to be offered £400,000 a YEAR to play union at Saracens.
