As a marketing ploy it worked- the place was sold out and packed to the rafters. Sadly the same couldn't be said about the semi final (also the world's first and biggest derby) held there a few weeks later!

Not often that you have to put up the "Sold out" signs is it...

Atmosphere..at DW we lost, TKL and Nikau sent off, season opener of 2001.



Result was crap but the atmosphere was mental, similar to the Magic this year, singing from start to finish.



Even the Wigan fans sang that night 'yeah shock of horrors you can quote me on that'.

That is the beauty of sweating your own asset. You are not beholden to paying out, regardless.

Aye fancy paying £2 million to fit extra seats, only to find they have been a waste of money as you can't fill them. #goodbusiness?

I was fortunate enough to get a place on the recent RFL survey that took place at the HJ. The question of What was your favourite game was posed? People gave their accounts and when I said the 09 Semi v Wigan the group nodded with acknowledgement as they also knew what a terrific performance that was on that day. M Monnas was outstanding running their pack backwards. Mary King was immense and Chris Hicks playing catch me if you can with Phelps to seal the performance was amazing.

I also remember Ben Harrison having a decent game that afternoon too.

put a post on here( favourite wigan game ) and a few pie munchers seem to get the hump,still wouldnt expect anything else...for me it would have to be the cup semi at widnes,made even more funny when a very small percentage of wigan fans were selling their wembley weekend tickets on the following weeks..also the prem semi final 1986 at wigans central park,paul bishops 5 drop goals,you could see the frustration in hanleys face...the years a bit vague but at wilderspool when sky moved our game from tv cos they thought it was going to be one sided and they were right we wacked em...after that any win over that lot....p.s some geat memories from these games nat wood running round the concourse at the wigan end just after he scored and greg mackey on the opening day of the season tormenting wigan to death...

Got to be the 09 semi, the only thing that would top it would be if we beat them in a final.
