| And those sat around me think differently
Horses for courses
The club want to improve/enhance the game day experience, they might not get it 100% right first time but don't knock em for trying, and don't knock em just cos you don't like it.
Yesterday was a poor game to judge it on, a flat game where the only question was how much we'd win by
Lets see what it's like in a tough, hard fought game

| I don't like it. For example you could here a whisper of a Bruno chant after Lawrence scored, I am sure that would have grown if the music hadn't drown it out. However, for whatever reason fans have almost given up chants altogether this season. This could be the increase in music or the decrease in fans, but whatever people on here say most fans and players would prefer to hear chants over music. Kids like to dance to the music, but they also like to join in with chants. Players have said time and time again the fans help lift them. How much of a thrill would it have been for Lawrence to hear his nickname chanted by fans on his comeback? To be fair in our case there needs to be a balance. Maybe the club need to speak with fans like Tansey and those at the back of the Kilner bank who sing and see if they can figure something out.

| Quote GIANT DAZ="GIANT DAZ"Ok, i'll probably get some hammer for this but just wanted to see what other people think.
Why have the club decided that having random noises or announcements during the game improve the gameday experience ?.
If its not RHP's voice over the microphone every 2 and a half minutes telling us in case we have forgot from last time who our sponsors are or his attempts at sounding like a boxing MC when announcing the players names etc its that silly Mexican tune - usually played when the ball is back in play and serves no purpose to me, We will rock you blurted through the PA system again at what seems to be random times of the game.
This along with music played as soon as a try is scored, drowning out any attempts of singing the crowd do try and make as there is no point so most of the crowd just sit down and let the music play. And Big G's banging of the drum to the same tune, then letting the kids spend 20 minutes 'freestyle banging' - i know this is a directive of the club and not something Big G himself chooses to do before anyone thinks i' having a go at him.
Maybe its just me and everyone else is fine with it but i personally think all this unnecessary noise has had an effect on what atmosphere there used to be as there seems to be something going off every few minutes which drowns out any crowd noise?.
Today just made me realise how utterly annoying all this noise is, and were we a passionate group of Ice Hockey fans it could work but were not and its cringeworthy to me ........ok , off ya go, shoot me down if you must !!'"
i agree, RHP does over do it sometimes.
the 'we will rock you' was cringe and embarressing!
and when we score a try just to get drowned out by the music straight after a try

| i dont mind the 'ole' mexican tune though, quite like it!
maybe its our fans that have an attitude problem like the players do sometimes and thinking we are going to just win easy..sure if it was leeds or one of the big clubs we would of have more chanting, some fans have the wrong attitude it should be chanting for every game london..catalans whoever
just because it was widnes people couldnt be bothered

| People are saying about more chanting but this is part of the point i'm making - because of the blasts of music/announcements/random drumming any kind of chant is drowned out immediately so there is no point trying to sing over something booming out over the tannoy.
Like has been said with the Bruno chant, people were shouting it but it just couldnt be heard.
The singers want to sing but at the moment its a losing battle against this Odsal-esque din so they tend not to bother which means people further down dont bother.
I dont mind the 'ole' music itself its just the timing of it - its almost like someone just decided to press a button and play it randomly at 20 minute intervals.
We never used to have music and the atmosphere was loads better as the songs could grow as people joined in.
Also agree with you Brearley about people only singing against teams with bigger away followings. Many times yesterday there was me and maybe 3 others trying to get songs going and no one at all joining in.

| how does it improve the atmosphere and bring new people in exactly?
people are deserting us in the droves and the atmosphere at home games is poor, and the music and gimmicks are probably a last gasp attempt to get people back.

| Fans will only return when they see Danny Brough on the town hall balcony with some silverware. As for the "music" totally irrelevant and distracting sound as though someone has accidentaly pushed a button on P.A. (not Paul Anderson)

Because the fans are split into various different groupings old men who remember the 50s, die hards who were there when the team was crap in the 80s and 90s and newcomers.
Many of the newcomers are women and kids and families.
They are the future for the club. The other two groups are the past.
It is always the other two groups who are the ones who moan. They knock the different coloured shirts, they knock the music, they think of Fartown not the Giants, they dont like the halftime entertainment.
The newcomers are the opposite. The kids love the modern music, they like different coloured shirts, they like big G and banging a drum.
There needs to be more done to attract fans and to make the whole day more interesting and FUN.
If it is FUN and exciting parents will pay to bring their kids along to keep them entertained. The balloons last season were really popular for the kids.
£ 24 for an adult seems like a lot. £24 for an adult and two kids seems like a bargain that is the sort of marketing that will get people through the doors
I have repeated ad nauseum things the club could do to add atmosphere AND IMPROVE THE GAME DAY EXPERIENCE with little or no cost but it gets nowhere.
There are things that can be done that do not include the defeatist attitude that we have to win a trophy or nothing

| Durham - I sit amongst 'newcomers' who have stated they hate the music and drum banging, so i dont think its correct to just put everyone in a bracket.
The rugby is my only weekly social activity and i spend a lot of money for this so i want to enjoy myself. At the moment home games are not enjoyable - for me - because of the reasons i've given, i much prefer away games where we can enjoy ourselves more, the atmosphere is generally loads better among the travelling fans.
I spend a lot of money following this club and the way i see it if i dont think i am getting value for it i will voice my reasons. some people might want to try and recreate 90's Odsal but i dont, i want to be able to get songs going and chant players names etc like we used to be able to.

| Durham I've been following home and away for the best part of 50 years and am getting cheeses off with being bracketed as being part of the past and Don't count now. I'm all for the club trying anything to help the atmosphere but sympathise with the choir who get drowned out. Perhaps it's a lot of the new fans (say last 5years) who deserted after last season and the price increases. I on the other hand am still going! Silly me, me being part of the past and all that!

The atmosphere at away games and the singing is better because the singers congregate together.
There has been no real atmosphere at the galpharm / jogn Smiths for years because it is so big, the singers are all spread out etc.
If the singers were singing i would agree with you about not having music BUT there is only a few die hards that sing and because we are all spread out others dont join in. Was it you or your bro who said that out of the group of 20 who used to sing at the back of the stands only 2 or 3 attend now. Many of your singing partners seem to have gone.
If you want atmosphere then the fans have to make it. If the fans cannot the club have to do something.
I would rather not have the music and have loads of people singing. But if people are not singing i would rather have music than sit in a morgue.
DESIGNATING 3 BLOCKS OF 50 SEATS for singers to congregate may be a start. I dont know if it would work but it is worth trying. 1 in the centre to the back of your stand and one each on either side of the Riverside stand. There are so few season tickets it would not be difficult for the club to do it without causing much upset to people. I would sing all game if others joined in but all that happens is me and Tansy start a song, sing 4 lines others join in and then feel isolated so give up. If we were all sat together you do not feel as isolated and would feel more comfortable singing
But every time i suggest it people like you come on and say it wont work, i dont want to move seats , come and join us at the back of the stand etc etc.
You cannot have it both ways.
If you want atmosphere get people together to do it. That means the CLUB being proactive in promoting it
