Just because Hetherinton prefers his team to play fast flowing style of play he gets slated for it. Who doesn't want to see that? Im sure Hetherinton is full of admiration of Wigans 2010 attacking play. That was because 12 of the 13 opposition teams are behind on this new defensive ploy. Once all teams get upto speed on it SL will be a slow boring sport.

Leeds plan to win with style? Shouldnt they just be concentrating on just "winning" first?



We saw how stylish they were at Wembley last season!

You might want to look again at who said that.



Its nice to see that the Wigan fans have got themselves all in a tizzy about proving that they dont use these tactics, when nobody but a naughty journalist has said they do.



Surely if Wigan dont use these tactics and they are the free-flowing rugby stars you pretend they are you should be supporting Hetheringtons statement, the fact you have all gotten so defensive about a journalists belief you do, shows your true opinion on whether or not your success was based upon these dark arts.

Both Him and Brian Mac have made a rod for there own back now.



I fully expect MM and IL to go the whole season without once talking poop to the press.



People like Heatherington, Kear only talk like this because they have no real relevance in the game. Nobody is interested in anything they say, unless the are having a sly pop at some one.

Leeds are in decline and if leeds fans wont admit it thats abit sad they have an old team which i hope wigan dont do hang on to players to long and for getting mcbarmpot as coach he isnt in the same league as doctor evil i mean brian mclennan and with leeds having alot of players out of contract at the end of the season and a coach who will want his own to sign his own players cant see them doing much this year

an admission that Brian Mcdermott:



a, could not put a defensive structure / system together to compete with the likes of Brown and Madge ?



b, is light years behind in terms of coaching techniques and up to date methods being adopted by Wigan etc



c, Our coach is sh*te basically !

Some OTT responses here. I think it is fair to say that Leeds were themselves guilty of this more boring style (at least in play-off rugby) in the 3 years of recent success. Wigan just took it to a new level with Maguire. It's also fair to say that the Leeds team of 2010 weren't the most exciting to watch either, so improvement here wouldn't go amiss from a fans perspective. I suspect GH is just trying to sell a few more season tickets and elicit a response from opposition fans at the same time.



Either way, I'd dread to think that Leeds will change their style just to prove a point. McNamara said something similar when he took over at Bradford, and look what happened to them... What Wigan do is successful because it works, just like the more negative & defensively orientated tackling style of Leeds under McClennan. If Leeds try and throw the ball around in Feburary without Peacock and McGuire it could backfire spectacularly.

The article is just an attempt by McDermott and Hetherington to please some impressionable fans. Leeds had a disappointing season last year and it's some meaningless rhetoric to generate a bit of excitement amongst the supporters.

They both know how important defence is and they will spend an awful lot of time working on their defence. A lot of fans will take no notice of the remarks, but for some it will give them some encouragement to come along and support the side.

Fans want to see their team play attacking rugby, and they don't really care about whether their side allows the opposition to play good rugby too. If Leeds slow the other team down and score tries for fun their fans will be happy.



It does surprises me that so many coaches jumped on the bandwagon of criticising the so called 'wrestling' tactics though. Every single Super League club practises some form of wrestling type tactics, you only have to watch them during the warm up to see what they are coaching their players to do.

Holding the man up in the tackle and slowing the ruck is no different to the act of turning the player round in the tackle so he can't play the ball quickly or getting your hands between the ball and the players arm during the tackle so that it looks like your arm is trapped. Every side employs tactics in defence designed to slow the game down or control the speed of the ruck. You can spot them pretty much after every tackle of every set of every game by every Super League team. Just because some are better than others doesn't mean what they're doing isn't just as bad.

That's the difference between us and Leeds, in the run up to the play off semi final for example which has already been stated on this thread they talked crap all that week while MM and IL said nothing!



Maybe G Heatherington should follow the same example!
