A nicer man you could never wish to meet. I only saw him at the back end of his career but even then he was a legend. Get well soon owd pal.

I was too young to remember him playing (not often I can say that these days!) but my Dad, who played on the wing in his younger days, always said he was one of the best wingers ever and one of the first to combine strength and speed.



Hope he makes a quick recovery.

My father said the best wingman he ever saw was Johnny Ring, Until Billy signed for us. He was the best ever so I was brought up to know until I watched Billy and didn't need any convincing.

Scored 100 tries in 63 games. (Josh just did it in 91 games)

By 100 games Billy had scored more tries than any other player. His record still stands I believe.

Great player,true legend.

Of that there is no doubt.

Been away so only just read this. I was fortunate to watch Billy from 1961 onwards - what a great player. His party piece was to attack the opposition centre with the full force of his body just as he received the ball. The result quite often was a spilled ball and a very groggy opposition centre. And he could score tries too. I remember one at Wakefield - they were one of the top teams in the early 60's and our battles with them were always hard fought. Billy scored the only try of the match in the corner in attrocious conditions to win the game for us.

I spoke to a friend at the Gym yesterday and he said Billy was very comfortable .Get well soon Billy .

Was speaking to Jim Mills at his book launch on Tuesday night, Billy is one of his closest friends and Jim was explaining that he had hoped Billy would have come along, but knew he was unwell. He was relieved when I told him he had gone home from hospital (which I picked up on here!). I remember the later period of Billy's career, his partnership with Eric Ashton has to be one of the best ever in the game, complimented each other perfectly.



One Wigan legend who did make it on Tuesday was Bill Ashurst who said a few words on Jim's behalf as they traded anecdotes about sending offs and being laid out!
