what a derby, so proud of our side tonight



we seemed to defend for at least 60 minutes and fair play to saints for keeping the foot down.



we defend like that next week and adapt better to the conditions in attack and wire will not live with us next week.

Having read the previous opinions on the game and the interesting discussions supporting differing points of view, here are my thoughts on Wigan's performance in last nights match.



Good points



Awesome defence

Never say die attitude

Some great individual breaks





Not so good points



Poor ball control (despite the wet conditions)

Poor kicking game

Poor options close to Saints line

Mediocre go forward

Unnecessary penalties

Poor support to some great breaks



Saints defence was really great as well last night which contributed to our difficulty in making progress from our own line. The rest of our difficulties last night are IMO of our own making. When all we seem to have done over the past few years is five drives and a kick, the skills necessary to break down a good defence won't come easily. We find it difficult enough to pass the ball along the line without somebody making a mistake, be it dropping the ball, passing to high, low, behind or in front of the receiver; so some of the more difficult skills will be beyond us until we start playing that way more often.



Despite the criticism, I am heartened by the effort for the whole game, rather than part of the game and that we are now trying to play more expansively (seen over the last few games too). When that part of the game becomes more natural there will be less chance of it breaking down under severe pressure like it did last night (from both Saints and the weather).



Here's hoping that progress will continue as I'm sure it will.
