I watched the 1990 challenge cup semi final the other day where we took on Oldham and made it to Wembley, its a good game to watch to realise what the semi final against Wigan will mean to our fans, the atmosphere was much better than the game itself though lol ..... Ive never in all my life watched a first half between 2 professional sides that had so many knock ons and unforced errors, a 0-0 scoreline at half time was a fair reflection of the first half lol ...... Definitely lots of nerves on show.



Now the part i wanted to get to was that "NO" try for Oldham which was right on the final hooter where they put a kick through and i think it was their winger that won the race to touch down in the corner, the ref which i think was John Holdsworth gave offside against the Oldham winger.



If their had been video evidence back then i think a try would have been awarded to Oldhamand we may not have made it to Wembley if they had kicked the goal, ive looked at it a few times and the Oldham winger looked as though he was at least level.....



This links slightly to another thread on here about video evidence, this is one perfect example of why i think we need to keep video evidence as it can be such a fine line sometimes between failure and success.

I recall that game well, stood behind the sticks at Central Park and the subsequent conga and singing in the streets through Wigan town centre.

Yeh same here, i was also behind the sticks at the Wire end which was packed and that was a big terrace at Central park .



When you go to games like this you get caught up in the atmosphere and the occasion so you don`t remember too much about the game itself other than the key moments, watching it back brings back some memories and you don`t realise how poor the actual game was until you watch it back, the occasion and atmosphere was far better than the game itself, Mark Thomas coming on changed the game for us.

I remember Des Drummond going up on somebodies shoulders at full time!

Who would have thought back then that it would be much longer to the next appearance* at Wembley than it was the previous one in 75.



Anyway I feel sorry for Wire fans who have never experienced such a day as that. Let's hope we all get another chance at Widnes

Off the top off my head, I was only 12 at the time, I went every game in the run to Wembley in 1990, luckily for us there was no such thing as a video ref that day.



We beat them in the lancashire cup earlier in the season at KR as well, great day that was.

All I can remember is running onto the pitch at the end and jumping on Fozzie's back which was damp with sweat (funny what you remember 20 years on) !! Also the pitch was covered in sand - hard to run in your trainers !!

Weird season 1989/90 and it seemed incredibly long although maybe thats because it was the season I was getting into rugby league. At the start of the year we looked like we were serious title contenders, by the end it was clear that there was a huge gap between us and Wigan and we went to Wembley happy to be there rather than with any real belief we were going to win.



1990 was one of my favourite sporting summers. Warrington got to Wembley, then we had Italia '90 and Graham Gooch was smashing Indian bowlers all over the place.

great summer,i had the pleasure of being on a cross channel ferry with the tartan army after their early exit from italia 90,you never heard a peep out of them and it was a pleasure to look at their sick mugs bobbing about in the channel.

Along with tam o' shanters, comedy orange wigs and empty Super Tennants cans?

After the game and everybody went crazy...running on the pitch in them days, to meet your heros, were common place.

Doing a conga.

Bob Jackson came over to me and took my quarter panel hat and put it on his own head. I saw it on a guardian and rugby leaguer picture in celebratory photos of that day.



Of-course I was thrilled. I saw him some years later just before he returned to OZ, He was on the bins, I think. I asked him about that day and that panel hat...He said he still had it.

plenty of all three about! there was something special about the comedy orange wigs sat atop of some of the most miserable and tired faces i've ever see,still brings a smile to my face nearly 20 years later,heres hoping andy murray gets tonked in the next round...och aye do noo...
